Biography
Brigadier Louise Martin was raised in Adelaide. She began her career in the Army Reserve as a Musician in the Band Corps while studying a Bachelor of Music at the University of Adelaide before joining the full time Army in 1996.
Brigadier Martin’s foundational health experience includes service in a broad range of command, staff and regimental roles within the 1st, 3rd and 17th Brigades and at the Army Logistics Training Centre. As Adjutant of the 1st Health Support Battalion, she deployed on Op ANODE as the Operations Officer of the hospital supporting the Regional Assistance Mission in the Solomon Islands. In senior health appointments, she has served as the Senior Health Officer of Headquarters 1st Division and Deployable Joint Force Headquarters, as Director of ADF Health Strategy and Chief of Staff at Joint Health Command, and Director of Army Health.
Brigadier Martin has enjoyed a range of diverse and demanding generalist postings throughout her career including serving as an Operations Captain on Headquarters 1st Brigade and as a Tactics Instructor and Package Master for command and leadership at Army’s Officer Training Wing. Recently, she has served as Military Assistant to the Chief of Army and as the Director of Logistics Plans at Headquarters Joint Operations Command.
Brigadier Martin has held command appointments as the Officer Commanding, Clinical Company at the 1st Health Support Battalion, and as Commanding Officer of the 2nd General Health Battalion. The highlights included deployments of the hospital capability to Taji - Iraq, the provision of specialist health team support to AACAP and exercises in Papua New Guinea and East Timor, and deployment of the field hospital on Exercises Hamel and Talisman Sabre. During her command tenure, the hospital undertook independent trauma verification with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and was awarded recognition as a level three trauma facility.
Brigadier Martin holds a Bachelor of Arts (English/History), a First Class Honours Degree (English) and a Graduate Certificate in Defence Studies. She is a graduate of the Australian Defence Force Academy, Royal Military College – Duntroon and Australian Command and Staff College (Joint). She has completed the AICD Company Directors Course, the AmCham Global Leadership Academy and ASPI Niagara Strategic Leadership Programs, and is a member of the Chief Executive Women’s alumni. Brigadier Martin was awarded the Conspicuous Service Cross for outstanding achievement as the Commanding Officer of the 2nd General Health Battalion.
Brigadier Martin is privileged to be serving as the Commander of the 2nd Health Brigade. She is married to John who is Chief Nurse of the Australian Federal Police, and together they have two school-aged children.
