About David Williamson:
David Williamson AO began his illustrious career with The Coming of Stork at the La Mama Theatre, Carlton, in 1970, which later became the film Stork. He quickly gained prominence with plays like The Removalists and Don's Party in 1971, followed by a string of successes including The Club (1977) and Travelling North (1979). David's work has received numerous accolades, notably for The Removalists, which won the AWGIE Award for best stage play and best script in any medium in 1972. His career spans over five decades, with plays like Emerald City (1987), Dead White Males (1995), and When Dad Married Fury (2012) showcasing his versatility. The 2010s saw continued success, with plays like Sorting Out Rachel (2018) and The Big Time (2019), both achieving box office success.
Williamson's contributions extended beyond the stage, with several of his plays adapted for screen, including The Removalists and Don's Party. His screenwriting achievements include five Australian Film Institute film script awards and twelve AWGIE Awards. Recognized for his cultural impact, Williamson received four honorary doctorates and was named a National Living Treasure by the National Trust in 1997. In 1983, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO). His work continues to resonate, with recent plays like Family Values (2020) and upcoming premieres The Great Divide and The Puzzle in 2024, underscoring his enduring influence in Australian theatre and beyond. Williamson resides on Queensland's Sunshine Coast with his writer wife, Kristin Williamson.
