The Indigo Collective is a newly formed jazz trio, with vocalist Angelina Pona, guitarist Ruby Firmstone and double bassist Sabine Tapia. Sydney-born but with different cultural backgrounds (French, Spanish, Filipino), the trio came together through a shared passion for jazz, having met at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
Angelina Pona is an up-and-coming Jazz vocalist making her mark on the Sydney jazz scene. Through a blend of exemplary technique and heartfelt emotions Angelina delivers passionate interpretations of jazz standards. Her rich warm tones have been captivating her audiences across the Inner West and East Sydney venues. When not performing, she is fine-tuning her craft through her Jazz Vocal Performance studies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
Ruby Firmstone is an emerging guitarist, currently studying Jazz Performance at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, with extensive performance experience. She has learnt from esteemed Australian jazz musicians, including Steve Brien, John Morrison and Kevin Hunt. In 2024, Ruby was a featured artist in Booker Magazine’s issue#02 ‘Fluctuations’. In 2022, she attended the Young Women’s Jazz Workshop, learning and playing with Australia’s most established female musicians. In addition to her studies, Ruby enjoys performing and writing music in a variety of musical contexts, having recorded albums with ABC Kids.
Sabine Tapia is a 20-year-old bassist in her third year of studying Jazz Performance at Sydney Conservatorium of Music, already cementing her place as a prominent young musician in the jazz scene. Based in Eora/Sydney, Sabine plays both double bass and electric bass, being taught by esteemed Sydney musicians Paul Laszlo, Breg Hirst and Cameron Undy. In 2022, Sabine was awarded the Corinna D’Hage Mayer String Scholarship, and in 2023 she attended the Siena Jazz International Summer Workshop where she learned from bassists Linda May-Han Oh and Mag Penman among many others. In addition to her studies, Sabine is also involved in various musical projects and collaborations, where she enjoys recording and performing original music, recently presenting her own compositions (in duo format with guitarist Harley Coleman) in the 2023 Sydney International Women’s Jazz Festival.
