Are you a lover of Pinot Noir? Those soft, light tannins; plush red fruits and savoury earthiness; a delicate, sophisticated wine with structure and finesse. I mean, what's not to love, right?!
On Monday 29 July, Sommelier and Owner of wine bar Famelia, Amelia Birch, is joining us at The Women's Club to host an event: 'I Can't Believe It's Not Pinot Noir' ~ a look at 'un-famelia' varietals (pun intended) that sit slightly adjacent to Pinot Noir and very much in the same spectrum of the light, bright red wine as described above.
At Famelia, Amelia features 12 new wines every month by the glass, exclusively made by women. She often chooses wines that are a little 'unknown', but no less delicious or approachable, as a way of gently pushing people outside their wine comfort zones. Often we don't know about wines that we rarely grow or sell in Australia, or aren't featured on wine lists at our favourite restaurants or in bottle shops. By opening up a world of varietals in an informative, risk-free, and experiential way she hopes to encourage wine-drinkers to feel empowered and confident in making wide-ranging wine choices.
When joining us for this event you will enjoy a 4-course menu, with 7 half-glasses of wines selected and matched by Amelia, that broaden the horizon around light red wine in a fun and approachable way. Each course we'll look at 2 wines - one old-world, one new-world, and all made by women - and compare and contrast them. If you're a Pinot Noir lover, this event is not to be missed...!
About Amelia Birch
Amelia Birch is a Sommelier and the owner of Your P.S. a personal sommelier service. She previously owned cafe/restaurant institution, The Book Kitchen, for 8 years, and is thoroughly enjoying being back in her consumer-facing role as sommelier of her new wine bar and bottle shop, Famelia, which opened last July, 2023. It's here that she is passionate about championing women winemakers, who are still the minority in a male-dominated and often toxic industry. She has two sons on the brink of teenage-hood, and also is completing a degree in Psychology and Counselling, another passion of hers. Until the time she graduates, she happily combines wine with informal therapy at Famelia.
